Jan 2015 - draft proposal for specific exemptions from marine licensing for underwater archaeology

In response to continued concerns within the avocational underwater archaeology community about the detrimental impacts of marine licensing on our ability to best research and manage the underwater cultural heritage under our care, a formal proposal for new exemptions has been drafted to present to DEFRA and the MMO. These exemptions are aimed to cover much of the work that Protected Wreck Licence Teams may need to do, plus some additional freedoms for those working on non designated sites. More…

Safeguarding the Nation’s Protected Wrecks

The Association of Protected Wreck Licensees (APWL) was established in 2013 as a forum to facilitate open communication, discussion, collaboration and cooperation within the community of avocational and professional archaeologists who work on, survey, monitor and research the wreck sites around the UK coastline that are protected by law through designation under the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973 (PoWA).

Membership of the APWL is free and is open to all members of PoWA License teams, to their counterparts in Scotland (where the legislation is changing under devolved powers) and to other interested parties.

We intend that the APWL will come to be recognised as the official voice of the PoWA License teams and so allow us to have formal recognition by heritage policy makers and representation on relevant policy bodies.

The formation of the Association is an opportunity for all Licensees and team members to share ideas, views and raise issues, which can be formally expressed through the Committee. We therefore welcome any discussion.

The secure area of this site includes a licensee and team member contact list and a forum to allow open communication between Association members. To request a login, please use the Contact page.
